Village of Delta Moves to Alleviate Flooding on Pelton Drive

Responding to the basement flooding concerns of several residents living in the Pelton Drive area voiced at the August 30, 2021 Village Council meeting, the Village of Delta took action and gave an update at the first September Council meeting.

Village Administrator Brad Peebles stated, in his Administrator’s Report, “In an effort to address the basement flooding heard by Council during the 8/30 meeting, crews attempted to camera the sanitary line serving Pelton Drive unsuccessfully.  As a result, Taylor Construction was retained to excavate and install a catch basin where the sewer line made a 90 degree turn and heads east.  Although the condition of the line looks good from what can be seen, additional videoing will be performed and the lines will be jetted to insure they are clear.”

The residents who had attended the August 30th meeting were also present and thanked the Council for its work and quick response.

In legislative news, Council decided to move forward with the First Reading Ordinance 21-12 to eliminate parking on Main Street between Wood Street and Madison Street.  The Ordinance had been tabled at the previous meeting after Milton Ruble, who lives at 416 Main Street, objected to the change in the parking status based on his need for parking spaces for a rental unit he owns at 418 Main Street.

However, Chapter 1121.01 of Delta Codified Ordinances requires Mr. Ruble to have two dedicated off-street parking spaces for each of his two rental units.  Mr. Ruble was unaware of this requirement.  The First Reading of the Ordinance passed unanimously.

A Third and Final Reading of Resolution 21-13, providing for the establishment of a new fund consistent with the requirements of Ohio Revised Code (ORD) 5705.09 (F) was approved.  Also approved was the Third and Final Reading of Resolution 21-15, authorizing the Village Administrator to enter into an agreement with Peterman & Associates for a preliminary layout, evaluation of existing facilities, and cost estimates for replacement of the public pool within Delta Community Park.

The initial meeting to identify the process and issues surrounding the pool has been scheduled for September 24, 2021 at 10:00 AM.  Staff involved will be he Finance Director, Water Superintendent, Pool Manager and the Village Administrator.

Swanton Middle School Holds House Reveal for SSI

https://photos.app.goo.gl/bZfPY1V2VPaQns9V8

Last Friday morning the Swanton Middle School (SMS) kicked off its fourth year of the Swanton Seven Initiative (SSI) by holding its House Reveal event at Hansbarger Stadium.  Swanton Seven Initiative (SSI) is a program implemented by SMS Principal Matt Smith and the SMS staff three years ago to teach vital “soft skills” that are used every day in professional work environments and situations.  To help create a more competitive atmosphere and encourage learning, students are placed in one of four “houses”.  Each house is made up of students from all four SMS grades.

The House Reveal event places all incoming fifth-graders and all new SMS students in either the House of DIGNITAS (Black), GRATUS (Gray), OBDURO (White) or SAPENTIA (Purple).  Each student was individually introduced and given a color-corresponding t-shirt by a welcoming committee of students currently in the respective house.  Special SSI events will take place throughout the school year and the students will be expected to wear their house shirt.
