The Delta Panthers celebrated their 2022 Homecoming weekend by literally running over the visiting Swanton Bulldogs 70-7 on Friday night. Led by seniors Bryar Knapp with 122 yards rushing on six carries and Jerremiah Wolford with 119 yards rushing on 13 carries, the Panther offense stuck to the running game, racking up 420 of 441 total offense on the ground.
Ironically, Delta’s first score came on their only pass attempt of the game, a 21-yard completion to Bryar Knapp from James Ruple early in the first quarter. The Panthers added two more touchdowns in the quarter and led 21-0 before the Bulldogs were able to get their offense untracked.
Swanton quarterback Ethan Hensley led a long drive to put his team on the scoreboard, culminating when he plunged into the endzone for one-yard touchdown to pull the Bulldogs within 14 points. However, Swanton had no answer for the Delta running game as the Panthers quickly responded with a James Ruple touchdown run of three yards and a 28-7 lead.
The Delta defense controlled the rest of the half, returning an interception and a fumble for scores, and the offense added two more touchdowns as the Panthers went to halftime with a 56-7 advantage.
The second half was played with a running clock per OHSAA rules, but Delta still managed to score twice for the 70-7 final. Statistically, Swanton was held to 115 yards of total offense with 83 yards rushing and 23 yards passing with three completions on six attempts. Knapp led Delta with four touchdowns, two passing, one rushing and one by interception. Panther place kicker Phil Smithers converted all 10 of his PATs.
Delta’s victory moves their record to 3-1 in the NWOAL and 5-2 overall. The Panthers travel to Wauseon next Friday to take on the Indians. Swanton drops to 0-4 in the league and 1-6 on the season. The Bulldogs host the Archbold Blue Streaks on Friday for their annual homecoming game.
