Live Streaming Now a Reality for Swanton Village Council Meetings

One of the campaign promises made by all four Swanton Village Council candidates prior to last November’s election was to implement the live streaming of all Council meeting to bring transparency to Swanton’s local government. Mayor Neil Toeppe had strongly advocated to make it permanent after the Council was forced by the Ohio Revised Code to live stream meetings when pandemic mitigation guidelines did not allow them to be held in person in Council Chambers.

Relocating to a larger venue allowed the Council, as it was seated in 2021, to discontinue the practice and, subsequently, all requests by Mayor Toeppe and repeated pleas from members of the public to continue, were summarily rejected. Once the new Council was sworn in and seated for 2022, the live streaming issue was placed back on the agenda. Legislation was drafted, reviewed by the Village Solicitor, approved unanimously by Council and equipment was ordered.

After experiencing some supply chain issues, the equipment finally arrived and was installed. Tonight’s meeting, 5/9/22, was the first to be live streamed on the Village of Swanton Facebook page. Village Administrator Rosanna Hoelzle said there will be some bugs to work out but, overall, the process was smooth. Anyone may now watch future meetings in real time or, because the meetings are recorded, at their convenience. Recordings will remain on the Village’s website for 12 months.

Swanton Village Council Chooses New Fire Chief

More than two months after advertising to fill the vacancy of Chief of the Swanton Fire and Rescue Department and conducting countless interviews, the Swanton Village Council voted to promote Captain Ed Dziengelewski to the top-raking position. The Council started the process with nine applications from very qualified individuals from both inside and outside the department. The list was pared down to five, then three then two before a decision was finalized during a special Council Executive Session last Monday night followed by the official vote in open session.

Captain Dziegielewski will be officially sworn in and begin his duties as Chief on May 15, 2022. He will be ceremoniously sworn in during the Village Council meeting on May 23, 2022.

EJ Ritter Event Hall Mother’s Day Brunch to Benefit Swanton Historical Society

The EJ Ritter Event Hall along with Studio 101 Salon and Spa located at 124 North Main Street in Swanton is hosting a Mother’s Day Brunch this Sunday with reservations taken at noon, 12:30 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to celebrate the holiday and help raise funds for the Swanton Ohio Historical Society.  It will be the first of what Janet Ritter, Swanton entrepreneur and proprietor of the host businesses, hopes will become an annual event.

“My objective for Mother’s Day was to have a Mother’s Day Buffet.  The purpose is to help generate some funds for the Swanton Ohio Historical Society,” explained Janet.  “The menu will consist of chicken, roast beef, and pasta complemented with mashed potatoes and cheesy potatoes, including vegetable dishes, salads, and desserts. Doors will open at 9:00 a.m. to allow moms to shop and enjoy specific salon services. Seating for brunch will start at noon. To help the Swanton Historical Society, there will be raffles, silent auctions, and baskets to raise money to help offset the cost of archiving items. Swag bags will be available for moms from local vendors and businesses.

Heather Williams of LuLu Fare catering will be providing the meal.  The price is $27.00 per person and children ages five and under will be free.

Once known as the Epic Center, Janet purchased the building from a local church group and relocated her Studio 101 business from a location on Church Street from where she operated for many years into one half of the facility.  “I’m excited about doing this because this hall fell into our laps.  I looked at it and I said this is a great event hall.  It’s not to big, it’s not too small.  It will seat up to 140 people,” she said.  It is a walk-in ready facility.  The linen, the music, everything is provided.  You simply bring in your food and decorations and have your event.”

Looking down the road, Janet may explore doing similar events for other holidays such as Easter and Thanksgiving, depending on how well this event is received by the public.  “This is my Beta (Test) experience.  This is the genesis of it and I hope that if goes well,” she said.

Currently, reservations are still available. Call 419-826-9146 or e-mail studio101salonspa.com.

One Dead, Three Injured, Two Critically at Evergreen High School Mock Accident Exercise

https://photos.app.goo.gl/zJ2Ts5L98qmArT778

The Metamora-Amboy Fire Department, with assistance from the Lyons Fire Department, Richfield Township Fire Department, Fulton County EMS and Fulton County Sheriff’s Department and Mercy Health Life Flight, conducted a Mock Accident training exercise at Evergreen High School in front of an audience of Evergreen students from the Junior and Senior classes.  With the Evergreen prom and after-prom this Saturday evening as well as the soon-to-follow graduation ceremony and subsequent celebrations, the goal of the exercise was to emphasize the potential dangers and consequences of driving while impaired due to alcohol or drug use or distracted driving, especially at a time of the year when high school students are more likely to indulge in illegal intoxicating substances.

District Superintendent Eric Smola addressed the student prior to the simulation.  “This is kind of a wakeup, a reminder of how fragile life is, how easy accidents can happen and how severe they can be,” he said.  “We have a number of agencies here to help us today and we want you to give them your full attention. If you have any kind of issues or concerns at the end of it, we do have people available to talk to.  So, it’s critical you give them your full attention.”

Mr. Smola then turned the exercise over to Metamora Fire Chief Jessica Geer, who happens to be an Evergreen High School alumnus.  “We’re here today because of our concern for all of you.  Obviously, as First Responders, the ones who come to the accident scene, we don’t want to see any of your smiling faces in this vehicle.  We don’t want to see any of you mangled or injured,” she stated.

Chief Geer told the students that, statistically, they are in the demographic that experiences the highest rate of injury and death due to traffic accidents.  As of April 24th, traffic accident deaths in 2022 stood at 1,154, an increase of 150 fatalities compared to 2019, she added.

“I want you to take a moment and look around at your fellow classmates.  There is a strong possibility that one of you could be injured or killed in an automobile accident.  I consider that a terrible waste of life,” declared Chief Geer.  “If I can do anything to prevent that, I want to.  That’s why we’re all here today.”

The Chief then explained the “Golden Hour”.  A time frame of 60 minutes that begins at the moment of the accident when a severely injured victim has the best chance of surviving if they can be transported to a hospital.  She emphasized how much critical time is expended from the phone call to report the accident to the intervals of each of the first responders arriving and carrying out each task of treating each victim and getting them to the hospital.  During the demonstration, the amount of time elapsed was announced between all the intervals.

The accident scenario for the demonstration was as follows:  Two cars, each carrying two teen-aged students crash head-on into each other.  Alcohol use and distracted driving was involved.  One driver was not wearing a seatbelt, was critically injured and died in the short few minutes before EMS arrived.  The passenger in the second vehicle was also not wearing a seatbelt but survived long enough to be treated first after a triage was conducted on all victims and was transported to the hospital by Life Flight.  The passenger in the first vehicle was also severely injured and was treated on the scene then taken to the hospital by ambulance.  The driver in the second vehicle suffered the least severe injuries.  He admitted to drinking alcohol, gave his statement to law enforcement and was arrested and handcuffed at the scene.

What the Evergreen students witnessed in this demonstration was everything that takes place in the minutes following a tragic but preventable accident.  That included the outstanding and professional work carried out by the first responders to save lives.  But it also included the heart-wrenching moments of a mother who arrived on the scene to find out her 17-year-old son was the deceased victim.  It was all an act today but it is something that is played out every day on our roads and highways.

Chief Geer asked the students to think if there was someone, they knew personally who had died in a car accident.  “I’m sure you can all think of one.  Unfortunately, some of us can think of more than one,” she said knowingly.  “The purpose of this demonstration today is to prevent any of you from becoming a memory.”

Swanton’s Memorial Park, the current location of Swanton High School’s baseball and softball home fields, played host to Food Truck Day in an effort to raise funds for a new baseball/softball complex to be located at the high school.  While the Swanton Bulldogs’ baseball and softball teams played varsity games against the visiting Evergreen Vikings, five food trucks were positioned in between the two ball fields on the roadway next to the enclosed pavilion.

The five trucks, CK Sweets, Coffee Depot, Cruising Cuisine, Fundae Sundae and LuLu Fare, offered a variety of delicious entrée and dessert items, much like you would find at a professional ball field.  All the food truck donated a large portion of the proceeds towards new complex fund-raising efforts.  In all, just under $1,000 was collected for the cause.
