The Swanton Lady Bulldogs defeated the Delta Lady Panthers in four sets, (25-12, 25-17, 21-25, 25-14), to move record in the NWOAL to 5-1, one game behind the 6-0 Archbold Lady Blue Streaks. Both teams have one league match remaining, both next Tuesday, with the Blue Streaks traveling to Evergreen and the Bulldogs hosting Bryan. An Archbold loss and a Swanton win would result in a tie for the NWOAL Volleyball Championship. Archbold controls their own destiny.
Delta’s league record drops to 0-6 and 3-16 overall. Swanton’s record on the season now stands at 17-2.

The Swanton Lady Bulldogs and the Delta Lady Panthers teamed-up on Tuesday night to help fight breast cancer and raise awareness of a disease that will be diagnosed in over 287,000 women this year according to an estimate from the American Cancer Society.
Each team recognized and honored family members or close friends that were a cancer survivor, currently battling cancer or had lost the battle, by walking onto the court with those person or carrying a pink rose in their memory. The event, organized by Swanton parent Nikki Walborn along with a host of volunteers, included a fund-raising raffle for items donated by local businesses and community members.
“Many people are affected by breast cancer or cancer itself and without a cure we’re losing people, unfortunately,” said Nikki. “I know it means a lot to do this and we’re raising funds for the Susan G Komen Foundation. It gets the girls involved and let’s them give back to the community.”
Both teams wore special game jerseys, Delta had white with pink font and Swanton had light pink with a darker pink font. Coaches and parents wore black jerseys with pink font and even the match officials wore very pink shirts with black font.
The Lady Bulldogs won the first two games of the match. The Lady Panthers won the third game and Swanton took game four to win the match 3-1.

Following the Pledge of Allegiance and roll call to begin the October 3rd Delta Village Council meeting, Mayor Frank Wilton read a letter addressed to the Council from Councilman Michael Tanner. The letter read:
“It has been my honor to serve our community and be a part of this council. Regrettably, I must resign from this council as I have purchased a home outside of our village limits. I would like to thank all the village staff, all members of council, our mayor, and all village members for the opportunity to serve and knowledge I have gained from this experience. I leave with the utmost respect for the village and complete confidence in our council’s direction for it. Sincerely, Michael Tanner.”
Speaking after the letter was read, Mr. Tanner commented, “I’d like to thank all of you for everything I’ve gained from this. It has meant a lot to be a part of the leadership of this community for the time that I have. I’ll be around if anybody needs anything.”
With the resignation of Mr. Tanner, who also served as the Village’s Vice-Mayor, Law Director Kevin Heban informed the Council that a new Vice-Mayor needed to be elected. Councilwoman Lynn Frank nominated Councilman Art Thomas for the position. Mr. Thomas was elected unanimously.
The resignation, which was effective immediately, creates a vacancy on the Council that must be filled. The Village will be soliciting for qualified individuals to replace Mr. Tanner.

The Delta Panthers celebrated their 2022 Homecoming weekend by literally running over the visiting Swanton Bulldogs 70-7 on Friday night. Led by seniors Bryar Knapp with 122 yards rushing on six carries and Jerremiah Wolford with 119 yards rushing on 13 carries, the Panther offense stuck to the running game, racking up 420 of 441 total offense on the ground.
Ironically, Delta’s first score came on their only pass attempt of the game, a 21-yard completion to Bryar Knapp from James Ruple early in the first quarter. The Panthers added two more touchdowns in the quarter and led 21-0 before the Bulldogs were able to get their offense untracked.
Swanton quarterback Ethan Hensley led a long drive to put his team on the scoreboard, culminating when he plunged into the endzone for one-yard touchdown to pull the Bulldogs within 14 points. However, Swanton had no answer for the Delta running game as the Panthers quickly responded with a James Ruple touchdown run of three yards and a 28-7 lead.
The Delta defense controlled the rest of the half, returning an interception and a fumble for scores, and the offense added two more touchdowns as the Panthers went to halftime with a 56-7 advantage.
The second half was played with a running clock per OHSAA rules, but Delta still managed to score twice for the 70-7 final. Statistically, Swanton was held to 115 yards of total offense with 83 yards rushing and 23 yards passing with three completions on six attempts. Knapp led Delta with four touchdowns, two passing, one rushing and one by interception. Panther place kicker Phil Smithers converted all 10 of his PATs.
Delta’s victory moves their record to 3-1 in the NWOAL and 5-2 overall. The Panthers travel to Wauseon next Friday to take on the Indians. Swanton drops to 0-4 in the league and 1-6 on the season. The Bulldogs host the Archbold Blue Streaks on Friday for their annual homecoming game.

Four weeks from tomorrow, on October 29th, a large section of Main Street in Downtown Swanton will be filled with ghosts, goblins, witches, vampires, action heroes and just about any kind of scary and fun characters you can think of when the Swanton Lions Club presents their annual and enormously popular Halloween Hoopla.
This year’s Hoopla is shaping up to be the biggest and most exciting in its history, even eclipsing last year’s record-setting event with more features and attractions than ever before.
For starters, there will be five inflatables (Bouncy Houses), pedal cars, a mini-jet from the 180th Tactical Fighter Wing of the Ohio Air National Guard, massive trucks from BCA Trucking, Bubba’s Heavy Towing and the Ohio Department of Transportation and lots of games for the kids to play.
There will also be great tasty food giveaways including hot dogs, popcorn, donuts, cider as well as candy from many of the downtown businesses. A do-it-yourself cookie factory will be set up in the Swanton Board of Education Building, a Pic-a-Duck game will be at the First Federal Delta and there will be a costume contest held at Club Salon.
For more entertainment, dancers from Julie’s Dance Studio will be there, dancing to numerous Halloween songs including crowd favorite, Michael Jackon’s “Thriller”. DJ Tim Fraker will be rocking Main Street with some great classic hits from beginning to end.
The fun begins that Saturday afternoon at 3:00 PM and runs until 5:00 PM. The Village of Swanton has scheduled their Trick-or-Treat time from 6:00 PM until 7:30 PM the same evening. Hope to see you there.

At the Swanton Village Council’s Committee of the Whole meeting, Mayor Neil Toeppe related some history and background information to Council members regarding the potential of creating a Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA) in the downtown area of Main Street. Mayor Toeppe explained that members of the Swanton Small Business Association (SSBA) have been discussing the issue for several years but could not move forward until the proposed area contained four businesses with a liquor permit that allowed the serving of alcohol inside their establishment. During that time there was only three, Benfield Wines, Hubs and the Swanton VFW.
“Earlier this year the State legislature reviewed that law and reduced the number of permit holders to two if the community has a population of less than 50,000. So, that meant putting us back into at least having the ability to have a DORA,” said the Mayor. “There are a lot of Ohio Revised Code (ORC) sections that will have to be complied with if we were to establish a DORA as far as public safety, boundaries, signage, public service sanitation, a lot of those issues.”
Once the law was changed, the SSBA approached Mayor Toeppe with the proposal to establish a DORA, and he, in turn, presented the proposal to Administrator Shannon Shulters and Solicitor Ken Murphree for review. Subsequently, the proposal was submitted to Council for consideration and, after a number of questions, all members agreed to move forward.
With that decision, the Village must publish a notice in a local newspaper (Swanton Enterprise) for two weeks to inform the community that Council is considering the DORA proposal and then decide how to enact the legislation. “The attorney has told us we have a couple of options,” said Mayor Toeppe. “One is we are not required to have a public hearing, but I would suggest that we do that. Second is that we can either pass this with a simple resolution or through an ordinance with three readings which will give people more of an opportunity to, at least, hear discussions at Council meetings.”
Mr. Toeppe then shared with Council some of his findings when asking other local community officials that have established DORAs about their experiences. “I’ve talked to the Police Chief of Perrysburg, the Economic Development Director of Sylvania, the Law Director in Defiance, to the Mayor in Napoleon, the Safety Service Director of Port Clinton, the Mayor of Lorain and the City Administrator of Tiffin,” he said. “They all expressed zero concerns. Many of them have already expanded their DORAs because they were successful.”
The Mayor also said he was told that people in these communities do not typically take advantage of the DORA unless there is a scheduled event such as musicians or bands. “These are usually casual gatherings downtown that encourage participation in DORA,” said Mr. Toeppe.
The initial DORA Plan, including boundaries, hours of operation and many other significant details has been established and can be viewed on the Villages website under Government>Legislation>Pending Legislation>Swanton DORA. Ms. Shulters as well as Mayor Toeppe acknowledged that some residents have expressed concern with DORA and she believes many of those concerns have been addressed in the Plan.
All six Council members were firmly behind holding a Public Hearing to help ensure Swanton residents would have a voice in the decision on the proposed DORA ordinance and strongly encouraged anyone to attend. It should also be pointed out that all of the Village’s public meetings are live-streamed of Facebook.
