Swanton Squeezes Past Liberty Center as Lemon Hits 100 Strikeout Mark

https://photos.app.goo.gl/vmFko6MVBwW2bQar8

The Swanton Bulldogs pulled off a perfectly executed suicide squeeze play in the top of the sixth inning to score what would prove to be the winning run in a thrilling come-from-behind 4-3 NWOAL victory over the Liberty Center Tigers.  With one out and pinch-runner Vinnie Fanelli streaking towards home from third base, Bulldog senior Brennon Mersing laid down a slow rolling bunt, leaving Tiger pitcher Landon Amstutz no other play but to throw to first as Fanelli dove across the plate, completing the three-run rally.

“A huge win,” said Swanton Head Coach Josh Seiwert.  “It was the kids.  We always preach to them timely hitting, good pitching and good defense.  We had all three today.  We got a big suicide squeeze to come back for the third run.”

A subplot to the game for Swanton was Bulldog ace, junior Adam Lemon, who entered the contest needing just three strikeouts to reach the 100 “K” milestone for his career.  For Lemon, however, getting the win was the only real priority.  “What was going through my mind was going out there and throwing strikes and let my defense play defense.  I wasn’t worried about the 100 strikeouts.  I was just worried about winning this game,” he said.  “They put it to us the last two years so, it was good to beat them.  It was really good to beat them.”

Lemon finished the game with seven strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.  With two outs and the bases empty, he was removed from the game because he had reached the OHSAA mandated 125 maximum pitch count.  Brady O’Shea took over on the mound and delivered a two-pitch save, including a running catch of a sinking line drive by Mersing in centerfield.

“He was phenomenal,” said Coach Seiwert of Lemon’s performance on the mound.  “The only reason he came out was because of the pitch limit.  It was a big win.”

Liberty Center, leading Swanton 3-1 entering the top of the sixth inning, replaced starting pitcher Amstutz with Alan Atkinson.  Atkinson surrendered three hits to Carson Lemons, Adam Lemon and an RBI single to Evan Smigelski to make the score 3-2.  Amstutz returned to the mound but was unable to stop the momentum as the Bulldogs rallied for the win.

With respect to Lemon’s career strikeout total, now standing at 104, he thanked his parents and his teammates for their support, with a special thanks to his battery mate, catcher Drake Harris, for his work behind the plate.

With the win, Swanton moves its record to 5-3 on the season and 1-1 in the league. The Bulldogs face the Archbold Blue Streaks on Thursday at 5:00 PM at home.

Taylor Forrest Breaks Swanton’s Career Softball Strikeout Record

In an early season game against the Lady Knights of Otsego High School, Lady Bulldog senior pitcher, Taylor Forrest, broke the career strikeout record of 232, set a few years earlier by Brie Williams.  As a freshman, Taylor played first base but also started several games in the circle while most of the pitching duties were handled by Brie, who went on to sign with the highly regarded Owens Community Lady Express Softball program.  Since that record-breaking moment, Taylor has sent an additional 18 batters back to the dugout without putting the ball in play.  As of this writing, her career total stands at 250 with many more games to come.

“Hopefully, we can play deep into the tournament, but I would say another 15 or so games,” said Swanton head coach Lauren Yoder, estimating the number of additional opportunities Taylor will have to boost her total.  “She will set the bar high for anyone else coming through.  It’s very cool to leave your mark like that.  It couldn’t happen to a better person.  There is nobody else that outworks her, she’s just a great teammate and a great person overall.  I’m really happy for her.”

In her main pitching arsenal, Taylor throws a fastball, dropball, riseball and changeup, each beginning with a confident and intimidating glare towards the hitter.  “It’s an accomplishment I didn’t think I would ever get.  The fact that it came so soon in my senior year is kind of exciting,” she said.

With the bulk of the schedule remaining, Taylor, a 2023 First Team All-NWOAL player, has the 300 strikeout total dead in her sights.  “That’s my new goal.  If I can go above that I’ll be happy with myself for sure,” she remarked on that impressive milestone.

Starting next fall, Taylor will have much larger goals to accomplish as she has officially committed to continue her softball career and her education at Heidelberg University in Tiffin, Ohio.  The Heidelberg coaching staff expects her to have an immediate impact on the program given her game is not just one dimensional.  Taylor is also a force with the bat in her hand and is a very good fielder as well.

The nickname for Heidelberg University’s athletic teams is the Student Princes and Taylor will proudly wear that on her next softball uniform.  Soon, she will soon be a former Lady Bulldog but for now, and quite possibly for many years to come, she will be Swanton High School’s Strikeout Queen.

Lady Bulldogs Take Down Patrick Henry 9-1

https://photos.app.goo.gl/VH9UTrhjqscURP2T7

Playing their first game since returning from their East coast road trip, the Swanton Lady Bulldogs’ softball team opened their NWOAL schedule by defeating the Lady Patriots of Patrick Henry 9-1 on Tuesday afternoon.  Swanton bookended a 3-0 first inning lead, with a four run sixth inning to seal the home victory.  Strong pitching from Bulldog ace Taylor Forrest (10 strikeouts) and a tight infield defense limited a hard-hitting Patriot lineup to just one run.

“We have an excellent infield this year.  Last year it was all freshmen so we’re returning them all back as sophomores with a year under their belts and we’re pretty solid.  They hit the ball pretty hard and we got a glove on it,” said second-year Swanton coach Lauren Yoder.

Offensively, the Bulldogs banged out 10 hits with Jordyn Rameriz going 3-4 with two runs and an RBI, Lyla Carrizales, 2-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, Alexa Faber, 2-4 with two runs scored and an RBI and Forrest, 2-3 with 3 RBI.  In the circle, Forrest pitched a complete game allowing three hits and one unearned run with just two walks to go along with her 10 strikeouts.  “She’s always been our rock,” said Coach Yoder speaking of her senior leader Forrest.  “Up or down, we can always count on her to be consistent throughout, both pitching and at the plate.”

Swanton followed up their league win with a 15-2 five-inning drubbing of Ottawa Hills at Memorial Park.  Faber took the victory in the circle, hit a home run and drove in three to lead the Lady Bulldogs.  Carrizales and Rameriz each scored three runs.  Swanton improves their record to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in the NWOAL.

Solar Eclipse Delivers Totality “WOW” to Swanton

https://photos.app.goo.gl/qTdnU97pLcwA12Yt7

It has been hyped for well over a year as a “Can’t Miss, Once in a Lifetime Event” and, at 3:12 PM EST the cosmic forces delivered an awe-inspiring total solar eclipse to Downtown Swanton, Ohio. The Swanton Chamber of Commerce organized a block party within the confines of the Village’s DORA and sky watchers from all around the Swanton community packed its boundaries and celebrated for the more than two hours in the 75 degree soon-to-be-gone sunshine leading up to the celestial show.

In her first major public event, Delray Busch, the new Executive Director of the Swanton Chamber, put together quite a party as the crowd anxiously waited for the big moment. Abigale Rose provided the music. Happy the Clown made toy balloons and painted faces for the children. Food trucks Hahny’s Smash Burgers & Bakes, Tornado Potato and Al & Zoe’s Fat Boyz kept everyone fed while Benfield Wines and Hub’s Bar served adult beverages and more for those wishing to partake.

At zero hour, the skies darkened, the streetlights lit up and night paid a brief visit to the Village of Swanton in the middle of the day as the crowd burst into applause. When the sun began to re-emerge from behind the moon, light quickly flooded downtown and the featured act of the show was over.

Swanton will once again be in the totality path of another solar eclipse. It is projected to be on September 14, 2099. For those who do not have the patience to wait that long to see another total solar eclipse in this country, you can travel to Montana on August 23, 2044. Don’t forget your solar glasses.

Swanton Picks Up Home Victory on the Road

https://photos.app.goo.gl/1MAfrm6CtagAP81y6

Forced into a change of venue because of poor home field conditions, the Swanton Bulldogs spotted the “visiting” Delta Panthers a first inning 1-0 lead then scored the next eight runs to grab their third win of the young season, 8-1, on Friday afternoon at Delta’s Jim Harmon Field.  Luke Marlow and Drew Koder singled to start the bottom of the first off Panther starter Landon Griesinger and came home on the one-out double by Drake Harris to go on top 2-1.  In the top of the second, Bulldog pitcher Adam Lemon hit the first batter then surrendered a double to Vinney Mauer, putting Panther runners on second and third with nobody out.  However, Lemon reared back and struck out the next three hitters to end the rally and Delta never seriously threatened again.

Carson Bond reached base on a dropped third strike to open the second inning and later scored after two more singles by Marlow and Koder.  Delta’s defense, including two great plays by shortstop Brady Moor, kept the score at 3-1 until the Bulldogs scored once in the bottom of the fifth and broke the game open with three runs in the sixth to seal the win.

For the Panthers Alex Brown had a single and an RBI, Mauer had two hits including the double and Brody Waugh had a single.  Griesing took the loss on the mound.  Delta rebounded from the loss with a 11-1 win over the Northwood Rangers at home on Saturday.

Marlow led the Bulldog attack, reaching base four times with two hits, a walk and an HBP to go along with three stolen bases.  Harris had two hits and two RBI, Lemon had two hits, two runs scored and an RBI, Isaiah Bolyard crushed two doubles, one to center and one to left field and had one RBI.  Lemon pitched five innings, giving up one run on three hits while striking out nine and allowing two walks for the win.  Brady O’Shea closed out the game throwing two innings of one-hit, no runs relief with one strike out.  Swanton followed up the victory with a 5-1 road win over the North Central Eagles on Saturday afternoon.

Evergreen’s Eli Keifer Signs with National Champion Trine University

https://photos.app.goo.gl/3ppRo8uyJaDCdLJs9

Eli Keifer, sharp shooting guard of the Evergreen Vikings basketball team, signed a National Letter of Intent to continue his education and basketball career at Trine University in Angola, Indiana, the newly crowned NCAA DIII Men’s Basketball National Champion.   In joining the Thunder basketball program, Eli will be under the tutelage of NCAA DIII Men’s Basketball 2023-2024 Coach of the Year and 1999 Evergreen graduate, Brooks Miller.  Coach Miller played basketball for the Vikings and for Eli’s father, Jerry Keifer, who retired this year after 31 seasons at the helm.

“The connection is obviously the best part.  I have a former teammate (Evan Lumbrezer ‘23) that goes there and the academic aspect of it is really intriguing,” explained Eli.  “I’ve grown up going to all the camps and I’ve always been drawn to Trine because of the connection so, that’s where I’m ending up.”  When asked about becoming a part of a national championship program, Eli said, “It’s exciting.  Obviously, they’ve got a bunch of guys ahead of me, but any impact I can make I’m willing to do.”

The other part of the connection is Brooks Miller having spent four years being coached by Jerry Keifer and will now be coaching his former mentor’s son.  “It’s very special. I’m very close to Coach Miller and that’s never going to change,” said Jerry.  “I’m excited to see what happens next and I know Eli is excited about getting there.”  Coach Keifer is also excited about being just a dad and a fan after running a very successful Viking basketball program for over three decades and chalking up over 400 wins.

For Eli, the academic aspect will be studying to earn an undergraduate degree in Exercise Science and pursue a PhD after that.
