Dylan Smigelski of Swanton Medals in Boys DII District Tournament, Heads to State

For the first time in over three decades, the Swanton High School boys’ golf team is sending an individual to the OHSAA State Golf Tournament.  Bulldog junior Dylan Smigelski fired a 77 to top all other golfers at the Boys DII District Tournament at Eagles Landing Golf Course at Maumee Bay State Park in Oregon.  Smigelski edged out Walker Peterson and Cooper Friedman of Ottawa Hills who both shot a score of 78 and Lane Lopez of Delta who finished with a 79.

“Once I finished up on 18 I kind of knew I had it, but there were some kids who still had to complete it,” said Smigelski, a First-Team All NWOAL selection this season.  “It was like 15 or 20 minutes later I was told.”

Course conditions were more challenging than last Thursday when the Sectional Tournament, also held at the par 72 Eagles Landing, was contested.  “It was definitely windy and the heather was really tall so there were tough conditions today,” explained Smigelski.  “The greens were fast.  They were definitely hard because of having no rain.”

Delta Panther junior Lane Lopez also qualified for the State Tournament but had to defeat Toby Holman of Upper Sandusky in a playoff after they tied for the second individual to advance with a 79 score.  The Archbold Blue Streaks, who qualified for the District Tournament as a team, finished in seventh place with a score of 360.  The Ottawa Hills Green Bears won the tournament with a 321 and the Liberty Benton Eagles took the remaining team qualification spot with a 332.

The OHSAA DII Boys State Golf Tournament will be played next Monday and Tuesday, October 6th and 7th at NCR Country Club in Kettering, Ohio.  Scheduled tee-time for both rounds is 9:00 AM.
